What you should know about St Martins

We are glad you have decided to visit us and are quite sure that, through Christ, you will greatly enrich our community.

Our church exists to enable the family of God to experience and respond to the love of Jesus. Because of this love, we seek to become closer followers of our Lord and through our spiritual growth we will, by his grace, become vital and vibrant members of the body of Christ. Over the many years that St Martin's has been in Dunkeld we have seen massive changes in the area. As the nature of our city changes, so our church has altered to meet those needs. The old theatre clubs and musical evenings have given way to Alpha and music group practices, and part of our worship has become more informal as befits our new millennium world. In addition, we are convicted of the need to reach out and positively impact the lives of the wealthy and poverty-stricken urban population surrounding us. We are glad you have decided to visit us and we pray that we will grow closer to God during our time together. We still need monetary donations and other help: the spreadsheet alongside outlines where you can help specifically. Our former Rector, Luke Pato, has been chosen as the next Bishop of Namibia. It was proposed that St Martins should send a representative to the consecration service in Walvis Bay. This was discussed at Council but we found ourselves in a somewhat invidious position of deciding who we should send. We concluded that St Martins should fund their trip so that they could represent St Martins and the Diocese. The Bishop has expressed his sincere appreciation to St Martins and Luke and Essie have been advised that Bishop Steve and Liziwe will represent St Martins and the Diocese. Bishop Steve was unable to find a suitable candidate for St Martins within the Diocese who reasonably matched our profile and was available at this time. He invited us to look outside our Diocese and to submit the names of any prospective. You will recall from Vestry that we budgeted for a modest growth in the income which parishioners give to our Lord through St Martins. In March, the situation has looked better, but much of the improvement has apparently come from some Parishioners who tithe on an annual basis. We pray that we as a community may all want to follow what Scripture tells us about how we should respond to our Lord’s unconditional and abundant love for us. Because our cash balances have been below our minimum levels, we have had to postpone s0me important projects including the final stage of the current plan for upgrading our sound systems and laying a new pathway through the memorial garden to the Chapel. We want to really thank our clergy who have done and aredoing so much for St Martins, including carrying the workload of our former Rector and also for supporting the Parish of St Francis in Parkview whose Rector has also retired. We were particularly aware of how we are blessed with our clergy during our services over Easter. Bring your knitted or crocheted winter woollies, or any warm clothing, to a special service. Our Clergy will bless the items and they will then be distributed to those in need of warmth. Come and enjoy a traditional, delicious Jewish Passover Meal and learn about the wonderful symbolism of Christ in the Passover.
