Zevenwacht Estate: About Us Harold was born and raised in Stellenbosch where he spent many of his holidays working in vineyards or fruit orchards. After school his desire to master the world of commerce led him to the Gauteng business nucleus where he established the highly successful Johnson Crane Hire company. Zevenwacht Estate: Meet The Team Harold and Denise lead the team at Zevenwacht with Harold staying close to the land overseeing the vineyards, cellar activity and other property initiatives. Winemaker: Jacques Viljoen Jacques comes from a family dedicated to viticulture which is where his passion for winemaking and vineyard development were firmly entrenched. Agriculture at the University of Stellenbosch he carried out his practical internship at Bergkelder. Cellar & Vineyards The wines of Zevenwacht Estate are distinguished by their finely crafted elegance and classic style. Our winemaker, Jacques Viljoen, honors the centuries-old wine-making traditions, yet is boldly innovative, welcoming the contribution that modern technology makes to the vinification of premier wines. Conservation & Sustainability Environmental management and conservation is a high priority at Zevenwacht. In 1829 Pieter de Wall purchased Langverwacht and later also Zevenfontein. Both properties were purchased and farmed by de Waal’s son, Adriaan, until 1903 when they were sold to a mining syndicate following the discovery of tin on Langverwacht. By 1918 mining operations ceased when insufficient value could be realised from the mines, and the land was restored to farming. In 1982 the Zevenwacht Cellar was built and produced its own wine for the first time in Harold was born and raised in Stellenbosch where he spent many of his holidays working in vineyards or fruit orchards. However, the allure of the Cape and working the lands soon drew him back to his Stellenbosch roots. Their strong commitment to realising the rich potential of Zevenwacht led to the expansion of the wine production facility and a number of new tourist attractions on the farm. Today, Harold and Denise are as dedicated to preserving Zevenwacht’s rich cultural history as they are to inspiring the new generation of Johnsons to continue the family legacy. A family owned and managed farm, children Tracey Evans (nee Johnson), Frank and John Johnson all play a pivotal role in the evolution of the Zevenwacht brand, its wines and hospitality venues. Harold and Denise lead the team at Zevenwacht with Harold staying close to the land overseeing the vineyards, cellar activity and other property initiatives. Denise concentrates her efforts on building relationships with their international partners, developing the local and international sales as well as directing the marketing and brand development. Her legal background is also rather handy when dealing with the vast array of trading, operational and property development contracts. Frank Johnson makes use of his sharp mathematical abilities to administer the finances of all the Johnson-owned properties, which extend beyond the farms. Tracey Evans employs her sales and customer relations expertise to manage the ever popular wine tasting centre, direct sales and trade marketing. She was instrumental in creating the varied offering at the wine tasting centre and uses these skills to broaden Zevenwacht’s presence in the trade. John Johnson played an integral role during the development of the Bottelary Conservancy, and combined his love of nature with his keen photographic eye to create the beautiful catalogue of the all the floral gems that make up the Renosterveld family.
