The African Commons Project is a registerd South African non-profit organisation based in Johannesburg, with the goal of mobilising communities through active participation in collaborative technology. Until recently, The African Commons Project has been the host organisation for iCommon s, a UK charity that has run three major international iSummits around sharing and collaboration in Rio de Janeiro, Dubrovnik and Sapporo. Our aim is to turn communities into active participants in the digital economy and to defend, protect, support and encourage the freedom of South African societies to create, build upon and share knowledge. Events that put a spotlight on the work of like-minded organisations that are building the internet into a resource for human creativity and development. Research that investigates the potential for networked technologies to rapidly change business models, and illuminate opportunities for wide-scale non-commercial production for the global common good. Projects that experiment with new ways of producing and distributing knowledge and creativity in a networked age. This stands for Free and Open Source software and is software that is liberally licensed to grant the right of users to use, study, change, and improve its design through the availability of its source code. These are the rights to ownership coupled with the right to object to any distortion, mutilation or other modification of the work where this would be prejudicial to the honour or reputation of the creator. Also referred to as The Commons, the public domain is an intellectual property designation for the range of content that is not owned or controlled by anyone. These materials are public property, and available for anyone to use freely for any purpose. This refers to adaptations or alterations of media such as music or song film, visual art and literature. Thousands of consumers in South Africa are victims of harmful or unfair business practices. These are either bad service or poor quality products and can cost consumers millions of rands every year. As consumers, we have the rights and responsibilities to put an end to the activities of unscrupulous business people that threaten our limited resources and harm the quality of our lives. It is the world’s largest reference site and has been created in a vast number of languages from around the world. As a first step when researching something on the web, this is a highly useful resource. The point is that intellectual property laws that were created over thirty years ago for an analogue world need to be updated to take into account our thriving, sociable, digital economy!
