There’s something magical about the notion of hot air ballooning. Cruising across the landscapes with a panoramic view, wind in your hair and the ground far beneath you. Hot air ballooning is something to be experienced at least once in a lifetime. Air to Air Africa is located west of Johannesburg in Gauteng. Situated in the Cradle of Humankind, this area is well-known as a World Heritage Site, having held the famous discoveries of ancient fossils. Ideally, Air to Air Africa is situated in an area that hosts a Game and Nature Reserve, on the picturesque banks of the Crocodile River. Our hot air balloon rides take off from Glenburn Lodge, a private game reserve located in the Cradle of Humankind. Due to safety precautions, hot air balloon flights in Gauteng only operate in the early morning. We ensure the safety of all our passengers, and guarantee the adventure and skyline cruise of a lifetime. No matter what the occasion, hot air ballooning is a great activity to do with friends, family or even colleagues. Or simply come to enjoy the excitement of a hot air balloon flight. Whilst surrounded by the beauty of nature, our hot air balloon rides. Upon landing, guests enjoy a glass of traditional sparkling refreshment, a French custom that we practise after each and every flight. Unfortunately a balloon cannot transport you to a destination of your choice & for the safety of our passengers we only fly at Sunrise. 200 years later, Albertus and Venetian inventor, Giovanni de Fontana conceived an object made from thick cloth and rings of wood. A man could sit inside this object, and held a burning brand made of pitch or tallow that produced large amounts of smoke. His theory: because of the fire, the air enclosed within the pyramid would be made lighter and move upwards. 1782: Joseph Montgolfier built a hot air balloon alone, filled with newly discovered hydrogen gas (one- fourteenth the weight of atmospheric air) King Louis XVI refused to let any man in the balloon for safety reasons. However a sheep, a rooster and a duck became the first hot air balloon passengers. During the flight the balloon caught alight but was extinguished. 1960: A hot air balloon set the record at 102 000 feet when Captain Joe Kittinger parachute jumped and broke the sound barrier with his body. Manned by Ben Abruzzo, Maxie Anderson and Larry Newman, a new record was set and was highlighted as the longest balloon flight at 137 hours. 1984: Captain Joe Kittenger sets a new record for the first solo transatlantic hot air balloon flight. 1999: The first around the world hot air balloon flight was completed by Bertrand Piccard and Brian Jones. They launched from Switzerland and landed in Africa. Air to Air Africa keeps the oldest form of flight known to man, alive.
