When enthusiasts discovered what tough cars Volvos are, they started to go rallying, and in 1965, a PV544 won the grueling Safari Rally. Volvo first started making cars in 1927, but that wasn’t the first Volvo product. When Gabrielsson and Larson moved into car manufacturing, they chose the ancient chemical symbol for iron as a logo to symbolise the strength and power of a Volvo. Jakob had a 1.9-litre four-cylinder engine and a three-speed manual gearbox. Volvo revolutionised safety in cars when engineer Nils Bohlin created the three-point seat belt in Bohlin’s innovative Y-shaped design protects the chest, pelvis and shoulders upon impact. We waived the patent for the pioneering design so that other car manufacturers could use it too. Volvo’s commitment to safety has saved an estimated one million lives. There’s a Volvo innovation in nearly every car on the road today. Our cars are kind to the environment every step of the way. Our commitment to putting people first means ensuring a sustainable word. We strive to make driving as environmentally-friendly as possible. Our Accident Research Team is an integral part of our commitment to our 2020 vision. American Irv Gordon drove three million miles over 47 years in his Volvo P1800. He’s the first person ever to clock up that mileage in the same-originally owned vehicle.
