Emotional Development Children need to be taught to identify, express and regulate their emotions. They also need to be taught that is vital that we experience both positive and negative feelings, but that it is the way in which we express these feelings can make them either acceptable or unacceptable. Social Development Children develop the capacity to interact socially with friends, family, teachers and society at large. We describe how children develop social skills, what can go wrong and ideas on enhancing their social skills. Therapy Use of therapeutic techniques to help children overcome trauma and rectify behavioral and social difficulties. Group therapy involves the coming together of people, under the guidance of a psychologist, to discuss an experience or difficulty they all have in common. Group therapy often creates feelings of support, understanding and encouragement and may also involve elements of psycho-education, where the psychologist provides group members with information about their common difficulty or experience. In order to qualify for a concession or accommodation learners need to have been assessed and to show at least average intellectual ability and a significant long term learning disability which will compromise examination performance. Difficulty with language medium where the learner experiences difficulties due to the fact that the language of assessment is not the home language of the learner. Supporting historical evidence (such as previous assessment reports, progress reports as well as Occupational Therapy reports, Speech Therapy reports, Physiotherapy reports, etc) Teacher comments (detailed observations by the teacher about how the learner is coping in class as well as whether the teacher is in favour of the concession or accommodation for the learner). We are a group of Educational Psychologists (commonly referred to by our clients as Child Psychologists ) from around South Africa, with the single common goal to provide relevant and up to date information about all aspects related to children’s learning and development.
