It has been in existence in its current location since The 6 classrooms are well equipped and have access to the lovely garden. The grassed playgrounds provide many opportunities for large muscle development, sand play, water trough activities and games. The school has a solar heated swimming pool for summer classes. It also has a library which fosters a love for reading and a small computer room where iPads are used to enhance concrete learning. The 2 classrooms are well equipped and vibrant and lead out on to a well- established garden and age- appropriate play area. We believe that meaningful, happy learning experiences in the early years will provide a child with a sound foundation for future education. The schools are situated in the educational nucleus of Craighall Park in the northern suburbs of Johannesburg. At Fleming Pre-Primary the needs of the modern two-career family are taken into account through the provision of quality after-school care and extra-mural activities. Should there be enough demand, holiday care is provided. We believe that good co-operation between parents and teachers can make an important difference to a child’s education. We therefore encourage open communication as the first step towards sorting out any educational or social problems which may arise. Parental support in areas such as: manners; socially acceptable behaviour; responsibility; independence; respect for others etc. Our Parents’ Committee is elected from interested parents who enjoy being involved in the school. They give valuable assistance in fundraising activities, help to organise school functions and are liaison between the parents and the school. Fleming supports a number of underprivileged environments. Staff training, teaching resources and day-to-day sundries are provided where required. Each class at Fleming has a project or charity that they support on an ongoing basis which include the NSPCA. Our programme consists of a combination of structured and free choice activities. We do not believe in a learning environment that is too formal or in putting pressure on pre-schoolers to meet the demands of inappropriate programmes. Daily activities are carefully planned to teach age-appropriate concepts and skills and to happily involve every child. Much emphasis is placed on hands-on learning with concrete (three-dimensional) equipment. A wide variety of quality perceptual and construction equipment is available to our pupils to develop literacy and numeracy skills. We believe in using bright, colourful art materials to give our pupils a sense of pride in their creations. The programmes in our 8 classes will differ to meet age and developmental differences. The younger groups have a greater variety of informal activities while the six year olds in the Grade R class have a more structured programme aimed at developing the skills necessary for confident entry into formal education. We carefully monitor potential learning problems and work closely with a group of therapists to provide assistance to pupils who need support in certain developmental areas.
