We provide care, comfort and support to our patients and their families who’ve been affected by a life-limiting illness. Our aim is to go beyond meeting the physical needs of our patients to offering emotional, spiritual and psychosocial support through our multidisciplinary team. Initially, care was provided by a part-time nurse from their house. It became known as Greendale House and was converted into a six-bed in-patient unit. By then, a full-time staff of five provided home-based and in-patient care. In 1985, the adjacent property was purchased with assistance from JCI, a leading mining company at that time. In 1995, our first facility in Soweto was opened in the Mofolo Clinic grounds. As the need for our services grew, we opened a purpose-built unit in Diepkloof in In 2007, we opened an OVC (Orphans and Vulnerable Children) crèche in an abandoned school in Mapetla, Soweto. Today, we have more than 150 full-time staff, including doctors, nurses, social workers, psychologists and spiritual counsellors. As a non-profit organisation (NPO), we have to raise our own funds. This we do through our HospiceWits Shops (11 in total), where a variety of donated goods are sold, through fundraising via generous donations from corporates and individuals, and through holding a number of events throughout the year. Our desire is to be involved with the patient from the moment they’re diagnosed, ensuring that we’re there with them every step of the way. HospiceWits provides the same holistic care for the orphans and vulnerable children of our patients at our Mapetla Day Care Centre, as well as our unique Paediatric Palliative Care Ward in Diepkloof. We’re not a place where people go to die; we’re the place that encourages people to live life to the fullest. Your generous donations of goods to our charity shops help us generate much-needed income to grow and maintain our services. We regularly host public events, functions and other initiatives throughout the year to help raise much-needed funds. Each year we request specific items that enable us to provide the much-needed care at our In-patient Units and patients’ homes. Get in touch and help us tick of items on our wish list. We’ll benefit every time that you swipe at Woolworths and other participating stores. Cars for Houghton and Soweto home-care nurses, bakkies and trailers for the collection and delivery of donated good and minibus for transportation. Waterproof, repair and paint wall in our Houghton prayer room.
