In industry the need to calibrate is often very real and practical. No thermometer will remain entirely constant, thermometer and sensors such a Mercury-in-glass (MIG), Thermocouples (T/C), Thermistors, Resistance Thermometers (RTD) change their characteristics with time, temperature cycling and they can become contaminated. There is a need to calibrate to meet Quality Standards, which for medical and safety applications may be vital to safeguard life. Calibration can improve efficiency, often if a thermometer’s characteristics are known more accurately savings in cost can be made. The requirement to calibrate temperature sensors continues to grow. Isothermal Technology has focused on providing calibration solutions for the calibration of all types of thermometers. The milling of materials that suffer from the impact of heat during the milling process can be very difficult to grind into powders. These materials tend to smear as they heat up forming a paste rather than a powder. Milling under cryogenic conditions prevents the sample becoming soft, in fact it makes the sample brittle, making milling of these materials far simpler. Since the vial is closed, the integrity of its contents is maintained, hazardous or critical samples are easily controlled, clean-up is simplified and cross-sample contamination is eliminated. The vials are kept cool by liquid nitrogen throughout the grinding cycle which keeps the sample at cryogenic temperatures preserving its key aspects. A choice of vial sizes are available to grind different sample sizes or to grind multiple samples simultaneously. The Elite BAF range of air re-circulating furnaces provide good temperature uniformity and rapid thermal transfer to the load at lower temperatures. Applications include annealing, stress relieving, tempering and normalising.
