As we all know, satellite internet provides internet through the use of communications satellites, and today there are multiple geostationary satellites that provide high speed internet to even the remotest locations on the face of the planet. However, this has not always been the case, and it is only in the past few years that satellite internet has become a viable alternative to other internet services such as ADSL. In order to understand exactly how far this incredible technology has come in a relative short time span, it is important to take a look at where the idea of satellite internet originated, and perhaps take a peek into the future of satellite internet. As this small metal sphere measuring just 58cm in diameter made its way to the stars, it is unlikely that anyone could have foreseen the wheels that had been set in motion. Although Sputnik 1 did little more than transmit a radio pulse, it represented a new era in technology, as the space race had finally sprung into full effect. After many failed projects to provide satellite internet to the masses, in 2003 the first internet-ready satellite was launched by Eutelsat, marking the official start of the satellite internet era.
