Neck pain as a result of muscle, disc or joint disorders, posture problems, or whiplash. Physio treatment to the relevant joints/muscles following injury as a result of sport e.g. Dry Needling is used to treat pain and dysfunction caused by muscle problems, sinus trouble, headaches, and some nerve problems. Dry needling works by changing the way our body senses pain (neurological effects), and by helping the body heal stubborn muscle spasm associated with trigger points (myofascial effects). hip/knee replacements, ligament reconstructions e.g. bronchitis using manual techniques and nebulisation. Chest treatment is aimed at improving breathing patterns and assisting patients who have a productive cough to cough up the phlegm. Compression of the sciatic nerve itself in the buttock area can also produce sciatica symptoms. Sciatica caused by compression of a nerve root can occur as a result of a spinal disc bulge or spinal disc herniation, or as a result of degenerated discs that can reduce the size of the space through which nerve roots exit the spine. Pain in the back of the leg that is worse when sitting or straightening the knee. Assessment involves diagnosing which of the nerves could be affected and whether the nerves are irritated from surrounding inflammation, compressed or irritated & compressed. During assessment, testing of muscle strength, back/leg mobility will help determine which nerve or nerves are involved. Examples of common conditions producing neck pain are disc degeneration, neck injury such as in whiplash or a pinched nerve. Pain when moving your head from side to side or backward and forward. Dizziness which can be from disturbance of the balance receptors in the neck or ears. A pinched nerve in the neck occurs when there is compression on the nerve from the surrounding vertebrae or disc. This can occur when there is degeneration of the cervical discs. As a result of this degeneration, the circular spaces between the vertebrae where the nerves exit the spine, get smaller and compress the nerve. These spurs can also push or compress the nerves in the neck. Poor posture like slouching from the shoulders and poking the chin out (like a lot of us do while working on computers) will cause the muscles in the back of the neck to become shortened and tight. Sitting with the chin poking out will result in the joints in the neck to become compressed and stiff. This will most likely cause pain and stiffness in the neck joints, reducing neck mobility. Tightness of the muscles in the neck can cause muscular pain and tension headaches. Shortened/tight muscles at the back of the neck, and weakened/lengthened muscles at the front of the neck. Physiotherapy for neck pain involves first diagnosing the cause of the neck pain, as well as identifying intrinsic (e.g. joint stiffness or a trapped nerve, treatment will be aimed at relieving pain and restoring full mobility. Extrinsic and intrinsic factors will also need to be addressed to minimise the chance of the symptoms returning.
