It is highly confidential so your identification will be protected. The initial screening will begin with a psychological assessment, followed by blood tests and then a doctors appointment where they there will be a pelvic examination and an ultrasound. Take note that this is an estimated time line it varies as eggs need time to grow. The reason why ultrasounds are performed is make sure that the growth and development of the eggs and to avoid/prevent Ovarian Hyper stimulation Syndrome (OHSS). It also allows the doctor to to see the eggs as they mature and the doctor can determine the size and how many they are. The way the eggs are retrieved is an ultrasound directed needle aspiration while you are under anaesthetic meaning you won’t feel anything as you will be asleep. The ultrasound probe with a needle guide is inserted into the vagina, allowing aspiration needle to be inserted through the upper portion of the vagina directly into the ovary. The ultrasound image allows the physician to accurately guide the needle to each egg to be sucked out. As the fluid is released, the egg is released and collected in the lab. You must have someone to drive you home as you will still be recovering. You may experience some cramping and spotting following the process and the clinic will prescribe the appropriate pain medication. You should avoid unprotected sexual relations seven days prior to the egg retrieval and for two weeks after the retrieval (until you get your next menstrual period).
