The bodybuilding elite of South Africa travelled to the Mother City in 2014 for the annual brawn-off. Breaking into the top six at the Mr. Olympia this year will be a dogfight. With only a few weeks to go, preparations are in full swing for athletes competing in the International Federation of Bodybuilding and Fitness (IFBB) South African Championships in Mpumalanga. Bodybuilding is alive and kicking in Port Elizabeth with over 500 fans attending the Physical Culture Association’s Nelson Mandela Bay Body Building and Fitness Championships at the weekend. In part 2 of our interview, Dylan Ridley shares some details from his Arnold Classic Africa 2016 experience, as well as his game-plan for the Arnold Classic Europe 2016 as he chases down his IFBB Pro card. We caught up with South African bodybuilder George Herwill, during his workout shoot for Muscle Evolution, and chatted about his recent injury and his thoughts on the upcoming Arnold Classic Africa. Sports scientists in Australia have urged athletes to separate their weight training sessions from endurance activity after conducting tests on, what is known in the industry, as concurrent training. According to researcher Kenji Doma from the James Cook University in Queensland the physiological stress caused by lifting weights can continue for several days as opposed to a full recovery within 24 hours following a typical endurance training bout. It was found that the body was able to recover within a few days after a typical 40 to 60 minutes of resistance training (weights) session whereas complete recoveries can be made within just 24 hours of a routine endurance training workout (like a run). There was reduced performance on the ability to run and cycle in athletes who participated in a single resistance training session.
