While public and private cloud adoption is starting to slow, hybrid deployments are picking up speed as companies look for ways to maximise return on investment (ROI) while maintaining full control over critical data. In just a few short years, some type of distributed computing solution will be essential. From the perspective of large public and private cloud vendors, it’s ideal for companies to move the entirety of their computing needs into the cloud. Improved ROI is part of the equation, as is scalability, agility and the big benefit of on-demand resources. But it’s just as possible to move a portion of your IT workload into the cloud and keep the bulk of it on local servers, and then scale up (or down) as needed. While the cloud offers big benefits for big business, there’s no downside to starting small. Five years ago, it was a given that on-premises security was better than anything in the cloud. Now, the two are almost on par, but there’s a difference: cloud security doesn’t operate the same way. Consider local stacks as a defined perimeter: so long as IT security pros lock all the virtual doors and windows and monitor any programs looking for access, the perimeter is relatively secure. This is a much more active form of security and as such has several benefits over reactive, on-site models. It’s also critical to account for the increasing role of wearable technologies and the Internet of Things (IoT) in day-to-day business operations. There’s a common perception that since at least a portion of cloud services will be managed off-site, local IT will need to scale back and some full-time positions will be cut. According to BaseLine, however, only 14 percent of organisations surveyed chose to downsize after moving to the cloud. Effective use of private or hybrid clouds requires strong communication between local IT professionals and vendor admins, especially if companies choose to continue using custom-built legacy architecture. And in the case of public deployments, many large firms find it’s possible to keep IT on but change their mandate, allowing them to pursue quality-of-life (QoL) projects that benefit the business as a whole. For large firms, leveraging the cloud doesn’t preclude the use of a data centre. Colocation is one example: companies purchase their own hardware but install it at the provider’s colocation facility. Many colocation centers are also carrier-neutral, meaning you can pick the telecom provider and cloud vendor of your choice. When companies think of moving to the cloud, getting data off-site and leveraging applications as a service are two straightforward benefits. But according to Telecom Reseller, there’s a large market opportunity for cloud-based communication systems such as PBX and VoIP. With many companies coming to the end of their current system’s lifecycle, there’s a move to hosted alternatives that provide the unification of voice, video and mobile services, all on-demand and without the need for a traditional telecommunications provider. For large firms, this means the benefit of global communication reach with the ability to control access user-by-user.
