In 2013 Nikiwe was awarded the prestigious Hubert Humphrey fellowship, part of the Fulbright programme, awarded to mid-career professionals who have shown leadership qualities. It aims to develop their professional acumen during 10 months at an American university, with the added perk of six weeks' work experience at a major organisation in the US. Nikiwe was placed at Arizona State University and was based at the university's Walter Cronkite School of Journalism and Mass Communication, with a specific focus on economic development. While in the USA, Nikiwe continued to write her popular opinion piece for the M&G. She returned to eNCA as the early evening News Anchor in 2013, but departed in March 2014 to work on expanding her own media interests and projects. She is also currently reading towards her MA in Journalism and media studies at Wits. Nikiwe is a Trustee of the board of the Nelson Mandela Foundation, which is charged with preserving his legacy. On the corporate circuit, Nikiwe is in high demand as a panel moderator and conference facilitator and a favourite for events that require an intelligent, dynamic woman who can actively participate in the subject matter.
