This is the digital version of our premier publication. The Survey is available only to our Premium and Core subscribers. Split into eleven chapters, the Survey is widely regarded as the best reference and strategic planning resource for organisations invested in South Africa. The eleven chapters of the Survey follow below.

The South African Institute of Race Relations was born in a climate of thought utterly different from that of today. White rule had been firmly imposed over vast areas of the globe. In Africa the only independent states apart from the Union of South Africa were Egypt, Ethiopia, and Liberia. Ellen Hellmann, The South African Institute of Race Relations: A Short History Throughout its history, the IRR has had a significant influence over ideas and policies in South Africa. The South African Constitution, which is a fundamentally liberal document, is one example. The ideas we promote are the pillars of freedom in all successful societies. T hat the State should be small but effective in carrying out its core functions. That people should be treated as individuals and not as members of groups. That property rights should be protected so that the poor can accumulate wealth and assets. That strong independent institutions in the media, judiciary, and civil society should be empowered to hold powerful interest groups in business and government to account. That economic freedom is as important as political freedom and that people should be empowered to stand on their own feet to work, start businesses, invest, and own property in order to improve their lives. Without much higher levels of investment and growth, South Africa will not defeat its triple challenges of unemployment, poverty, and inequality. Yet failure to do so could open the door to radical and populist policies that erode property rights, destroy political freedoms, and impoverish the country. Millions of South Africans are currently held back by bad schooling, poor housing, and failing health care. The mining sector in South Africa is in trouble, but not all hope is lost. Service delivery over the past twenty years has not delivered according to the dire needs of South Africans, but there is hope explains dr. Frans Cronje of the Institute of Race Relations in South Africa. Kerwin Lebone, head of Centre for Risk Analysis at the Institute of Race Relations in South Africa explains how protests have increased over the past years. They reveal the proportion of young people not in employment, education or training. For those who are 18 years old, it is 15.9% (because many in that age group are still in school). All in all a waste of talent and economic potential. Instead, it rests on nothing but five assumptions, none of which is likely to hold true in the real world. Through the Centre for Risk Analysis we help business and government leaders plan for a future South Africa and identify policies that will create a more prosperous society. The CRA provides its users with access to a unique and detailed series of products and services with which to identify, understand, and track social, economic, and political trends in South Africa. Relatively small changes in present circumstances and policies may bring about significant shifts in the country’s future. The CRA team is dedicated to identifying and analysing those changes so that you can bring them into your decision-making processes long before your competitors become aware of them. The CRA boasts a diverse range of users, from mid-size to large organisations across all industries and in both the private and public sectors.
