Born in Johannesburg of humble beginnings, master craftsman Sid Forman established the company over 60 years ago and still heads what has become one of South Africa’s most prestigious jewellery and diamond companies. Sid Forman is known as a master goldsmith, an artist, designer and jeweler. His work evidences a finely orchestrated, artistic approach to creating gold objets d’art, jewellery, painting and sculpture. Sid alongside his wife Lorraine as well as together with his children have passed on the creative heritage. Hunting trips, wild dogs and deer are depicted throughout the work, reflecting thematic adherence to the dichotomy of man and nature. Follow the carvings and let oneself be transported back to the age when these weapons were used. The pistols and accessories are housed in a hand carved Honduras Mahogany case, with its own gold hinge, lock and key. The outside of the case has inlays of gold and diamonds. In addition the gun case is housed in a custom-made buffalo hide suitcase, also replete with gold hinges and locks. Yet, the car surpasses these constraints to stand alone, celebrating the creative talents of a master craftsman. Its singularity is highlighted by its intricate detail. The oil-stick, working suspension, air filter, sump nut, door handles, windscreen wipers, water cap, spare tyres, steering mechanism and luggage trunk are a few of the movable and removable components, and the doors open and lock closed too. Such detail transforms this model from mere aesthetic appreciation and technical workmanship into the realms of imaginative wonder. Meticulous attention to material is reflected throughout the car. It is no wonder that it took three years, or 6786 hours of intense work to craft one kilogram of gold into this work of artistic and engineering excellence. Gold, diamonds, quartz, marble and bronze feature as materials of choice. Obsidian and rose quartz are polished to perfection and are best suited to anchor the study and create the base. Internationally Sid Forman has established itself as a formidable contender in the competition arena, winning international and national design competitions.
