What you should know about Sportsbooks

Publishers in Johannesburg, Books in Johannesburg, Book Publishers in Johannesburg, Journalist in Johannesburg

SportsBooks was formed in 1995 by Randall Northam, covering Olympic Games, former sports editor with United Newspapers and athletics correspondent of the Daily Express and a sports journalist for thirty-five years, World Cups and a lot else.

The company started as a vehicle to publish the ATFS annual, the track and field equivalent of Wisden, and as it has grown it has expanded to include the Nationwide annual (formerly the News of the World Annual), the world's oldest football book. Our first edition in 2008 was the 122nd year of the annual. We publish books we think deserve to be out in the marketplace although inevitably most of them appeal to a niche market. Our list includes books as diverse as 'Another Bloody Tangle! ', Peter Bishop's hugely amusing tale of a keen but clumsy angler, to 'The Lion and the Eagle', Iain Manson's fascinating account of the 1860 bare-knuckle prizefight between Tom Sayers of England and John Heenan of the USA. In a day when sport was far from organised this encounter took on the significance of an Olympics, a World Cup and whatever World Series you care to name all rolled into one. Most of our list is non-fiction although we did venture into fiction with 'Ultimate Goals' by Martin Dobson, the former England midfield player who starred with Burnley and Everton. We even published a book of horseracing poetry, 'Shergar and other Friends' that greatly appealed to us and to the reviewers. We don't use typewriters like this anymore but the process is essentially the same, putting words on paper and producing books. Read what we and our authors think about our books and the world in general, and make your own comments. Description: The Amateur Athletic Association, founded in 1880 during a meeting at the Randolph Hotel in Oxford, was for many years the world’s most influential governing body for track and field competition. It was the AAA which established the rules and ethos of the sport. One of the AAA’s Presidents was the judge at Dr Crippen’s trial; another climbed the Matterhorn and swam across Niagara. Competitors at the AAA Championships have included a Nobel Peace Prize winner, a best-selling novelist, a man who took part in The Great Escape of movie fame, and a leader of the Liberal Democrat party. Exhaustive lists of champions in all age groups and other compilations round off a volume which is effectively a history of British men’s athletics and represents the AAA’s legacy for future generations of athletes. The first official history of the AAA was written by Peter Lovesey and published in 1980.
