Cathsseta, is the Sector Education and Training Authority established under the Skills Development Act for the Tourism, Hospitality and Sport Education and Training Authority, Tourism, Art, the Culture, Hospitality and Sport Economic Sector.

There is no value in training people if they cannot use the skills they have learnt. Training and skills development is not just for young people starting their first jobs though it is important for them too! The skills of people already in jobs must also be enhanced. It is no good if someone is trained in one province if their qualifications are not recognized in another. It is not ideal for one employer to increase the skills of his or her staff if another employer does not recognize them. All training, wherever it is provided, should be subject to quality control and where appropriate be compared to the best international standards. Organizations benefit from staff that are engaged and trained to international standards. South Africa has become a top destination for holiday makers and tourists. It is essential for our industry to meet international standards. If you are in the hospitality industry in South Africa, investing in your staff's training and education is critical to staying abreast with industry standards. These materials were written over the last few years by writers commissioned by the Tourism Learnership Project (TLP ) as part of a learning materials development initiative to support the new qualifications produced for the tourism, hospitality and conservation sub-sectors. The intention was to ensure that there are materials available, especially where none had existed for new areas of learning. With the emphasis being on outcomes, rather than the method or process of training, trainers remain free to use whatever materials they feel are useful to them. We hope these materials are a useful support for the skills development work in which you are engaged. Monitoring and auditing implementation of Skills Development initiatives by employers in the respective THETA sub sectors. THETA is responsible for developing a Sector Skills Plan (SSP), which is a four-year strategic document.
