The Watkins family has a long history of being involved in property, dating back to the early 1940’s when Alan’s Grandfather became involved with the initial Master Builders Association. Alan’s Dad, Peter, ran his own successful property brokerage and passed the property bug onto his sons. Alan started Watprop having graduated from Wits University as a chartered accountant and completed his National Service at the Johannesburg Receiver of Revenue. Over the last 26 years Watprop has grown from strength to strength as a result of dedication and service to its clients. Community assisting Schools (CAS) is a group of concerned individuals from the community who come from many diverse backgrounds. We are united in our desire to make a difference in supporting and strengthening schools, thereby assisting with education in South Africa which is in crisis. We established that there are suburban schools in Johannesburg that are functioning with good administration, have very good pass rates, but who are limping along as a result of lack of funding and no involved parent bodies. We have started with a small network and by offering a few hours a month of our time, talent or finances; we have already made a difference to the schools in our area, namely Waverley Girls’, Highlands Boys and more recently H.A Jack Primary School. Guided by the Heads, numerous ways have been found to help schools and we have seen and had positive feedback for our efforts. The company continues to sponsor various programs through CAS (Community Assisting Schools) by assisting with a reading program, that runs twice a week at HA Jack Primary School in Johannesburg. This special reading program is for grade 2’s and involves 80 weekly volunteers actively working with the children on developing their literacy skills. In addition we have sponsored various repairs to HA Jack Primary School by upgrading the boy’s toilets which had reached a sad state of affairs. The school has ongoing needs which we will continue to assist with during the course of the year. The company continues to sponsor a hearing impaired child sending her on an advanced computer course in 2017 and continues to support an underprivileged soccer club in Soweto. We believe as Nelson Mandela did that education is the most powerful weapon in the world. This year we have sponsored a grade 2 learner from HA Jack Primary School all school fees and transport costs.
